Skills are presented on a grid. Basic skills are on the left, advanced skills are on the right. Experience is needed to progress from left to right, enabling more skills for selection.
Skills that rely only on experience are available for selection. Skills with a prerequisite are enabled when enough experience is gained but cannot be activated until prerequisites are met.
Prerequisites include previous skills, forming a branching web or skill tree. The layout of the skill tree is different for different classes.
Skills are grouped into rows, acting as a category. Categories include:
- General skills, regarding interaction with the world, such as jumping, swimming, climbing.
- Craft skills
- Class skills
General skills require general experience. Craft skills require craft experience. Class skills require class experience.
Each category is divided into rows of related skills.
In general, a row contains skills related to athletics, another contains skills related to conversation, another contains skills related to learning.
In craft, one row has blacksmithing skills, another has goldsmithing skills, another has carpentry skills. Job skills are placed here.
In class, skills are grouped by class, such as brawler, monk, druid, cleric, with basic skills on the left, and specialized skills on the right. Vertical separators on each class indicate class level and experience needed, and divide skills within level ranges.
Players start as adventurers, using skill points to select a wide variety of skills. Most players have a general assortment of skills until they decide to specialize. A specialist will lean towards one class to reach the highest skills, two classes to reach 80% across, three classes to reach 60% across, and four classes to reach 50%.
Players who choose not to specialize can continue as adventurers, having a large selection of the skill table, especially basic skills up to halfway across. They may have a few peaks in skill development, but not as much as a class specialist.
Skill progression should somehow limit the ability for players to cover too much of the skill table. Methods include cost penalties for more skills or cost penalties for crossing to different classes.
Players can switch skills and change their skill setup, as long as some system is in place to prevent instant class switching or leveling in an easy class to switch to a harder class. Separate experience bars per class can be used, so a character must earn enough experience in any desired class to have those skills available, but some balancing needs to be in place to prevent players from maxing out all classes and selecting only the best skills from each class. More skill trees on the right side of the table may help.
Cost penalties for crossing classes can increase to the right to unmanageable levels, so only staying within one class is affordable, but will the total amount of experience the player can earn be unlimited? A limited max exp number would help prevent any player from mastering all areas, but an unlimited maximum would encourage leveling to make up for the high cost.
The first approach forces players not to become uber, discouraging grinding players, and the cap for maximum points can be raised later. The second approach assumes time is enough of a barrier to maxing skills, but gives hardcore grinders an unfair advantage in combat, making grinding a necessary evil for all players.
Both limited and unlimited skill maximums can be tested to see what short term and long term effects are presented.
[edit] Skill raising
Skills have a base skill level, a static bonus skill count, and a temporary bonus skill count. Base is the actual skill level, static is from skill bonuses by other skills and armor, and temporary includes short spell effects and skill effects, and injuries or item bonuses that raise or lower a skill.
Skills can be raised by other skills, such as a magic skill increasing a specific school of magic. Items can increase skill levels when equipped. Spells and disposable items can give temporary skill bonuses or penalties. Traps, enchantments and curses often lower specific skills.
Base skills are raised by using a specific skill, adding decimal points until the skill is a certain level. Most skills can be raised from 1-20, with 20 indicating mastery. Other skills have level limits of 10, 5, 3, 2 or 1. A skill level of 0 means the skill is inactive and unusable, and can happen from spell or item penalties on a skill. Skills with limited use, or skills meant to give bonuses to other skills, are typically limited to one level.
Experience is needed to enable greater variety of skills, while currently enabled skills can be leveled up without depending on experience, as long as the minimum experience requirement to enable the skill is met. This makes basic skills more attractive for early development, but the time commitment for level twenty is greater. Or, skill levels can be dependent on class levels, so a skill needs X experience in a class to raise, preventing fast maxing of skills.
The requirement to raise each skill level is listed in the skill description, such as Swordfighting 1-3 requiring 10 xp, 4-6 requiring 400 xp, 7-10 requiring 800 xp, 11-13 requiring 1800 xp, 14-16 requiring 2400 xp, 17-18 requiring 3200 xp, 19 requiring 6400 xp, and 20 requiring 12000 xp.
Each level describes the type of bonus given, such as increased hit percentage. Level 20 skills are considered "natural 20" actions and rarely fail.
Each skill has a number indicating maximum level, with a minimum of 1 for all skills, and a maximum of 1 for non-leveled skills.
