Rune

From Neverend

Runes are crafted by a mage with crafting skill to make runic swords, jewelry, and other items. Mages can create a runestone, a stone inscribed with a rune. Runic items have a permanent, lasting effect on their item. Multiple runes can weaken the effect and raise contradictions, unless supplement runes are in place. Items can only hold limited space for runes depending on the item. Runes are modified from traditional runes.

Using the right order, runes allow the item to cast a corresponding spell effect, such as "fire" and "dart" being fire dart. The item can have a bonus against creature types, be strong against creature types, create a creature, cast an offensive or defensive spell.

The rune crafter skill determines the power and effectiveness of the spell. A low level crafter can create spell effects weaker than those cast by enchanters, a higher skilled crafter can have effects equal to and slightly better than enchanter effects, and a highly skilled crafter would be at the same skill as a high skill enchanter. Runic items are mainly a substitute for enchanting temporary spell effects.

Longer rune sequences and more powerful spells require a higher crafting skill, as a longer rune sequence will increase the chance of a failed item. An incorrect rune sequence will also fail. High level spells have a higher chance of being crafted as infrequent effect items, or weaker versions of spells, such as a dragon summoning rune creating a weak dragon hatchling. A high skilled crafter has a better chance of producing an item with an optimal spell and a high activation rate, but success is not guaranteed.

Crafting skill determines the rate of usage for an effect if the effect is manual, and the rate of being cast if the effect is automatic. A lightning enchanted sword may use lightning magic rarely if enchanted by a low skill crafter, but more frequently from a high skill crafter. A manual summon spell from an item might work once a day, twice a day, four times a day, every two hours, every hour, or every half hour.

Rune mages can use instant rune magic by using rune stones. Rune magic opens a grid of all runes, showing all runes present in inventory and the quantity of each rune, and requires typing or selecting available rune stones in the right order to cast an existing spell. Each rune is destroyed when a spell is cast. Rune spells drain small amounts of mana, but cost much less than typical mage spells. Rune magic skill determines the power and effectiveness of the spell used, so a high level spell will be weak or fail if used with insufficient skill. Each spell has a skill level for proficiency.

Rune stones are stored in inventory under "rune stones" as a container, listing individual stones and quantity when selected.

There may be special types of rune stones that are used on the rune grid when in inventory, runes with multiple charges, rune stones with three charges until being destroyed, or rune stones that become uncharged when used once and cannot be used until recharged. Increasing the variety of rune stone types creates an excess amount of runes, but may be manageable if stored as simple text variables.
