Mercy
From Neverend
Death is avoidable through mercy. If an opponent has low health, showing mercy will stop an attack, but the opponent will still be targetted and vulnerable. The opponent can either try to attack or wait. Monsters and enemy NPCs will pause when given mercy, but will attack if they are angry, charmed, or controlled. When given mercy, an opponent may bow, give thanks, whine, sob, offer gold, offer items, or offer temporary servitude.
Players can also try to make opponents show mercy. When in combat, the player can concede, going in to a non-combat position, and kneeling. The opponent can either attack the player, allow mercy, demand servitude, demand money or items, or demand something specific. Monsters and NPCs will have different reactions to conceding based on intelligence, anger, greed, and other factors. Sucessfully conceding allows the player to fulfill a request such as giving gold or fighting alongside the monsters, preventing further attack from those monsters unless provoked. Some monsters may simply demand the player leave the area, others may ridicule the player and laugh, or give them a head start in running away while giving chase or throwing projectiles. Monsters who ignore mercy are typically extreme enemy factions or alignments, unintelligent monsters, angry monsters, or charmed and controlled beings. Even monsters may show mercy by withdrawing from combat, or focusing their attention on another priority such as more powerful players in the area, or protecting territory.
