Artifacts are unique items. Only one exists in the entire game. The server keeps track of all artifacts, including location and current owner. When a player account is deleted, the artifact is redistributed into the world.

While artifacts are quite powerful, their legendary status means that many players will try to hunt down the current owner of an artifact. Wars and backstabbing will occur from artifacts. Alliances will be forged. And some will simply hide and guard their artifacts, deep in a heavily fortified lair, never to be touched (but one can only hope.)
