Heavy armor can only be worn by those who specialize in strength. Mages and other classes can make up for this with magic enchantments and magical armor. Armor substitutes have drawbacks including mana drain, limited charges, low durability, or focus on a specific type of damage.

Armor that is effective against physical attacks is less effective against magical attacks, and armor that is effective against magical attacks is less effective against physical attacks. Hybrid armor gives a good balance of magic and physical protection. Armor should not provide superior magic and physical protection unless it has serious drawbacks.

Enchanted armor allows armor to have extra magical effects that may last temporarily, for a limited numberof charges, or with a mana cost or other requirement. Enchanted armor focuses on resisting different effects, or adding light magic effects, rather than increasing defense. Weaker armor should allow more effects, medium armor should allow less effects, and the most powerful armor should have no effects unless it also has serious drawbacks.
